Marc-Antoine Laugier was an 18th-century French Jesuit priest and architectural theorist. He is best known for his work "Essai sur l'architecture" ("Essay on Architecture"), which was first published in 1753. The book argued for the natural simplicity of architecture and the importance of following nature in design. Laugier believed that the orders of classical architecture were actually derived from the primitive huts of ancient people, which he saw as the essential basis for all architectural design. This approach to architecture became known as "primitive hut theory" and had a significant impact on the development of Neoclassical architecture in the 18th century. In addition to his architectural theories, Laugier was also a noted art critic and writer.
